Punjab Government Announces Free Solar Panel Program Deadline

The Punjab government has set January 5, 2025, as the final date for residents to register for the free solar panel initiative, a move designed to support households struggling with rising electricity costs. The initiative, launched by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on December 6, 2024, aims to distribute 100,000 solar systems over the next year, targeting lower-income households that consume 100 to 200 units of electricity per month.

How to Register

Residents can register for the program through two simple methods:

1. Via SMS: Send your National ID Card (CNIC) number to 8800.

2. Online Registration: Access the Punjab Information Technology Board’s dedicated portal at cmsolarscheme.punjab.gov.pk.

The selection process involves a computerized balloting system to ensure transparency, and eligibility will be verified using reference and CNIC numbers from electricity bills.

Key Features of the Free Solar Panel Scheme

Benefits for Eligible Consumers

Under this program, households consuming up to 100 units of electricity per month will receive a 550-watt solar system, while those using up to 200 units will be provided with a 1100-watt solar system. These solar panels are expected to significantly reduce electricity bills and offer a sustainable energy alternative for residents.

The program also contributes to environmental goals, potentially lowering carbon emissions by approximately 57,000 tons annually.

Safeguards Against Theft

To prevent misuse, each solar panel and inverter will be directly linked to the beneficiary’s CNIC. This measure aims to enhance accountability and ensure that only eligible users benefit from the initiative.
