Passport Counters Opened: New passport counters were established at the Multan Bar Council on February 24, 2023, and at the Rawalpindi High Court Bar on October 31, 2022.
e-Passport Introduction: Launched on March 30, 2022, to improve security and convenience for international travel.
Online Passport Renewal for Overseas Pakistanis: Began on June 2, 2021, enabling expatriates to renew their passports online.
Application Process for Passport
The passport application process includes several steps for both domestic and international applicants:
- Online and Regional Office Applications
- Apply Online: Available to both domestic and overseas Pakistanis for passport renewals, minor modifications, or new passports for newborns.
- Regional Passport Office (RPO): For new applications or renewals, applicants need to visit an RPO or a Pakistan Mission abroad with the required documentation and payment confirmation.
Application Process Step-by-Step
Arrival at Customer Service Counter:
- The applicant arrives at the counter, receives guidance on the process, and is issued a token.
Fee Verification and Data Capture:
- The applicant presents their CNIC or other ID. Fee details are verified, and the applicant’s photograph and biometric data are captured. A token is issued.
Biometric Data Capture:
- Fingerprints are collected at the biometric counter.
Data Entry:
- Application details are entered into the system. The applicant must review and sign the data entry form. Any errors at this stage may require restarting the process.
Verification Against ECL/BL:
- The applicant’s details are checked against the Exit Control List (ECL) and Black List (BL). Processing is paused if the applicant is on either list until clearance is obtained.
Interview and Decision:
- The Assistant Director reviews the application and may conduct an interview. Additional documents may be requested, or the case may be referred to a security agency for further review.
Passport Delivery:
- Once processed, the passport is collected from the delivery counter. It can be picked up by the applicant, a blood relative, or an authorized person with a letter. Passport status is communicated via SMS or email, based on the applicant’s location.

Domestic Tracking: Applicants within Pakistan will receive updates via SMS through code 9988.
International Tracking: For overseas applicants, updates are sent through the Email Rabta Service if an email address was provided during the application process.
