Agricultural Tubewell Solarization Initiative In Punjab
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched the Agricultural Tubewell Solarization Initiative to reduce farmers’ energy expenses and promote sustainable farming practices. This project aims to make farming more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
Project Details
The Agricultural Tubewell Solarization Initiative, chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, aims to install solar panels on tubewells for farmers. Key details include:
Eligibility: Farmers with up to 25 acres of land are eligible for the solar tubewell installation.
Cost Sharing: Farmers are required to cover 33% of the installation cost, while the government will subsidize the remaining 67%.
First Phase of the Project
The project will roll out in two phases:
Initial Phase: Conversion of 7,000 tubewells to solar energy. This transition is expected to significantly reduce operational costs.
Current Costs: Running a tubewell with diesel costs approximately Rs. 3,000 per acre; electricity costs around Rs. 1,500 per acre.
Solar Costs: Using solar energy will reduce the cost to Rs. 50 per acre, representing substantial savings.
Second Phase Involvement
Expansion: In the second phase, the federal government will support the conversion of an additional 10,000 tubewells to solar energy. This expansion aims to further reduce farming costs and enhance sustainability.
Economic Benefits for Farmers
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized the project’s role in alleviating high electricity costs for farmers:
Cost Savings: Solar energy will reduce the cost of running tubewells, leading to increased profitability and lower production costs.
Sustainability: The initiative supports environmentally friendly practices, contributing to sustainable agriculture.
Special Package for Vegetable Farmers
A specialized package will be developed for vegetable farmers:
Purpose: To manage the supply of essential vegetables like tomatoes and onions.
Objective: Ensure a consistent and reliable supply of these key vegetables.
